I think my friendship with Jon transcends both time and space for most of his 70 years. He had a very warm celestial smile. He loved playing the family organ. I didn't know a thing about it, but I loved listening to him. Before we all
"Googled" on the internet I was using Jon as a walking, living textbook on life. Nobody knew Owen County,IN genealogy better than Jon. We were in the same classroom during our grade school
years. We had the same employer after school, The Spencer Evening World. Jon and I couldn't wait until we got done. The last part of both routes would run parallel within two blocks of Moss & Money's Rexall Drug Store. We enjoyed a coke and each other's company before riding our bicycles home. Forty-plus years later when Jon was working for Smithville Telephone in Ellettsville, IN Nancy and I would meet Jon ocasionaly at his favorite fast food restaurant, Long John Silvers.

The entire Lawrence County Museum community will miss Jon Appleby. He was a dedicated volunteer and supporter of our museum who could always be counted on for a friendly greeting. He had an uncanny memory for detail and had also become quite an expert in Quaker genealogy; I consulted Jon frequently when Quaker questions came up. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family at this sad time.
