There are certain people in life that stand out for their genuine love for humanity. It is certain that this lovely woman still lives the hearts of so many for that reason. Because of that genuine love, others, including myself, are inspired to live every day in such a way that our loved ones know that they are cherished. Mickey, your beauty still surrounds us, and though you aren't here, I've no doubt that you are surrounded by love where you are now.

Hello Deskins, Please find peace in that your Mom/grandma is watching over you with a healthy soul. I remember you talking about your gramma when you were in school, Amanda. Keep those memories with you forever. I lost my "grams" 22 years ago and I still talk to her when I need a resolution. She still finds a way to guide me. Yours will be there for you too. Peace and condolences to you all. Mrs. Nixon

There are so many great stories and memories I have with my grandma. I don't even know where to begin. When I was a baby, mama sewed this wonderful baby blanket for me. I remember when I got scared at night; I would hide under it and feel so safe. I dragged that thing everywhere with me and that was the best gift she has ever given me besides her love. Other times when I got scared, she would lie next to me and talk to me until I fell asleep. When I'd wake up in the morning, I could smell her amazing homemade food. When I turned three, she took me to the dollar store where I found this stuffed cat. She bought the cat and a carry cage for me. We named it "MeowMeow." This, along with the baby blanket, went everywhere with me. When I would go over and spend the night, she would always ask me "Did you bring MeowMeow?" and sure enough, MeowMeow was always in that bag. That stuffed cat even went to college with me this year. As I got older, my brother and I would argue a lot. She would never spank us. However, she created this idea. She called it The Naughty List. She'd say "Don't make me write your name down on The Naughty List" and for some reason I was so terrified of my name being written down on that list. She would also play teapot with me. She would set me up a little table and put Pepsi in my teapot. I would pour her some "Tea" as she set in her rocking chair and we would have a great time playing. I would sometimes get too close to her rocking chair and my feet would almost get rocked on. So she made up this story about Tom the Cat. She said old Tom the Cat got his tail rocked on; now he has no tail. From then on, I made sure I was a safe distance away from that chair. Yet when I did get too close, she'd say "Don't make me tell you the story about old Tom the Cat. She was very smart. She could add prices together in a heartbeat. She used to take me to Meijer's every so often to do some grocery shopping with her. She would add up what the cost in her head as she went along through the store. She would tell me how much it was going to be and when the cashier calculated the price, she was always in a $2.00 range. Which reminds me; she knew how much I loved claw machines and would always give me a dollar so I could play. I believe she loved going to Meijer's more than Mickey Mouse loved Minnie. It is weird to say but so many wonderful and funny memories came from Meijer's. She would take me to Meijer's to get a hamburger and just talk about life. She never bought her own hamburger because she knew I could never finish mine. When I was 9, my grandma bought me a brand new outfit; a white shirt with pretty overalls. She dressed me up and took me to Meijer's. As I was walking down the Aisle, I saw pop that I wanted. She said I could have a pop. I reached for the one I wanted and as soon as I touched it, it exploded all over me. My outfit was ruined with red pop. I was so upset that it was ruined and I started to cry. When we got back home, she washed my new outfit and worked her magic. The stains were gone. I was happy again. She cared so much about people's happiness. She also cared about people's health. When someone was sick, she would worry about them. She would always ask me how so-and-so is doing and she'd hope they'd get better. I know when I got sick in school, she would pick me up, take her back to her house and feed me popsicles. And I would feel better. Grandmas always know best. Especially Mama. When I would go over to her house she ALWAYS had fresh cookies made for me. They were so soft and sweet. I swear she has a secret ingredient that she puts in everything. Not only could she cook, but she could sew. She sewed so well. Mama could fix any hole in a piece of clothing. She tried to teach me to sew but I was too impatient. Now I wish I had learned from her so I could pass it down to my grandchildren. I would give anything to sit down and sew with her again. About a year ago, we were leaving Meijer's and she looked over at me in the car and said "Amanda, make sure you get a job where you can be independent and don't have to rely on someone else." She said "Look at your mom, she can support herself independently." Those words stuck with me more than any other words she has ever said before (besides I love you). I can hear her say those words so clear. She was wise and amazing. I love and miss her so much. And when I'm 69 years old, I'm going to sit in my rocking chair and think "Wow… what an amazing women."

I have such fond memories of growing up and visiting Aunt Mickey, she almost always was in the kitchen sitting at the table drinking her Pepsi. I was very fortunate to have been one of her nieces that lived close enough to take advantage of her sewing talents. She was my very own Barbie Stylist, I had fur coats to flowing wedding gowns. All the girls in the neighborhood like to play with my Barbies because of all the wonderful clothes that she made for me. I still have all those Barbie clothes and both of my girls played with them. Thanks Aunt Mickey for making my Barbie so Stylish. You are one of the best Aunts any little girl or for that matter big girl could ever want. I love you and will miss you! Iva

I will miss you but am so thankful for all the great memories. I will never for get the day I found out your real name was not MICKEY, you and mom were bowling and I asked you if you were a DR. You laughed and said no the VMD stood for Vada Marlene Deskins, I looked straight at you and said well that is a funny name why do we call you Mickey! You said, "I really do not like my name and I like Mickey better." I said, "I don't blame you." Also, I was so grateful that you were MY Aunt and that you had no girls because you made the most awesome Barbie Doll clothes. I had the best doll clothes in the neighborhood. I still have those doll clothes and both my girls played Barbies with the clothes you made me a long time ago. Thanks for being such a wonderful Aunt and the best darn Barbie Doll Clothes maker ever. I love you!
