This communication professor cannot find the words... I was one of Tyler's professors at EKU...and I loved him so! After he graduated and I took a new job at the University of South Carolina in Beaufort, we stayed in touch through Facebook. Tyler called me the day he was diagnosed to ask me some questions about what he might expect through his cancer treatments...because, you see, I just last year went through chemo, radiation, and multiple surgeries myself. At the time, Tyler felt like he could beat it and we talked about how this experience would redefine him. But then I didn't hear from him again...and this worried me. I can't tell you how sorry I am that we lost Tyler. Frankly, I'm very angry about it. We must continue to work to find ways to prevent and more successfully treat cancer. Tyler was such a bright light for so many people... My heart is broken for you, his friends and family. Please know that our family here in South Carolina will be praying for your comfort and peace.

I was fortunate enough to get to know Tyler through the Communication Studies major that we both shared at EKU. Not only did I work on class projects with him, we also would go out to parties together. He became a friend of me and my wife and we both loved to hang out with him. I always knew Tyler to be a happy and caring person who had an amazing talent with art but could still communicate with lots of different people with ease. Hogan was one of those guys that was such a pleasure to be around. He was always positive and enjoyed the company of everyone he was with which radiated out and uplifted those he was with. Even it was just a homerun derby we set up at the intramural fields on a Tuesday night I always enjoyed the moments with Tyler and friends. Those are the moments at EKU that I won't forget.

I remember Tyler from playing ball with David (my grandson) in the summer. He so loved that sport and was an excellent pitcher. I enjoyed seeing mom and dad watch him play and encouraging him in something he enjoyed so much. I will always remember his smile that made his eyes twinkle. Our prayers are with your family in this time of extreme sadness. I can't help but immediately remember our tent camping trip that our two families took together and the night the kid that was obsessed with tv and video games disappeared from the other 4 kids at midnight and we were out searching for this kid in total darkness and found him standing on the rear of a really nice camper watching tv.
